CD-1038 - CUTTER Sold For: $275 Color: Aqua
About half of the wire groove is buffed smooth from the wire rubbing in it. We haven't seen one like this before. This indicates the insulator was functioning just as intended, leaving the wire free to move about freely as the tree swayed in the wind. The insulator is very crudely made and it's hard to tell what is post-factory damage; however, there is a 1/2" by 1" slice on the side next to a 1" bruise. The embossing on the top is very strong. This insulator has led a rough life from the moment it left the factory and from years of use but we do find the smooth rubbing in the wire groove rather unusual and interesting, and the strong embossing adds to its appeal!

CD-1038 - Cutter Dark Aqua w Heavy Steam Sold For: $340 Item: #75

CD-1038 - CUTTER Sold For: $440 Color: Aqua
This Cutter and the example in lot 171 were found out in the Colorado wilderness decades ago, and were likely used on the same line. This is the first opportunity for anyone to acquire them. The base is in typical condition with several flakes up from the base, all on the rear. There appears to be a manufacturing flaw from the base to the hole with some associated flaking on one side. Crudely made with glass folds on the sides. The embossing is weak and it is difficult to read the patent date. Purchase the pair and keep these two brothers together!

CD-1038 - CUTTER Sold For: $440 Color: Aqua w/ Amber and "Milk"
{Ribbed base} This is an unusual style, and this example is quite interesting because it has a microbubble trail that runs from the base and over the top of the arch. You can see some amber in the glass, especially at the end of the arch. This design was patented by Scott C. Cutter on April 26, 1904 as a tree insulator, and it bears the embossing "CUTTER PAT APR. 26, 04". These often have significant chipping and flaking on the sides and along the long, sharp edge of the base, but this one is in quite good condition and better than many. Given the condition and unusual coloration, this is a very desirable example of this early non-pintype style!

CD-1038 - CUTTER Sold For: $798 Color: Green
{Ribbed base} The green Cutters are hard to come by! The high-point edges on the base are chipped off, and the insulator is a little rough all over with a slight haze. This design was patented by Scott C. Cutter on April 26, 1904 as a tree insulator, and it bears the embossing "CUTTER PAT APR. 26, 04". It was attached to a tree through the holes. It is a popular style of an early, non-pintype insulator!

CD-1038 - CUTTER Sold For: $633 Color: Green
{Ribbed base} Green! These are much less common than their Aqua counterparts. The Cutter is known as a "tree insulator" as it was attached to a tree through the holes. It is a popular style of early, non-pintype insulator, and this is a very nice example, with only the typical flaking on the base. The Green coloration and the great condition add up to a doubly desirable example!

CD-1038 - CUTTER Sold For: $528 Color: Aqua
{Coffin bottom} Some of the typical flaking on the base, including a 1" flake on the rear. The Cutter is known as the "tree insulator" and it was attached to a tree through the holes. Typically, the base is curved with vertical ridges. This is a less common variant called the "coffin bottom," and there is a square recess in the base instead. The Cutter is a popular style of early, non-pintype insulator, and the base type makes it more unique!

The interest in this non-pintype style has been increasing over the years and this is a colorful example. |
