CD-116 - A.U. Sold For: $99 Color: Light Aqua
While it's difficult to see the "A.U." blot out on the front, you can clearly see the "C" blot out on the rear, and thus can conclude it's the A.U. [020] embossing. This may have been a transition-embossed insulator, with earlier examples having a smooth base. Later, the sharp drip points were added, as well as the "PATENT MAY 2 1893" embossing, as the style of that embossing looks different from that on the front. 1/2" chip on the base of the skirt, 3/4" base/skirt flake/chip that affects the "2" in the rear embossing, 1/4" ding/flake on the crown, and a few other dings and flakes here and there. It's interesting to attempt to reconstruct this example's life and embossing over time!

CD-116 - DEC. 19 Sold For: $165 Color: Blue Aqua
There may be evidence of an "A.U." blot out, but we'll list this as a Dec. 19, 1871 primary embossing. Researchers have always been puzzled by the "Patent Applied For" embossing, as no patent has been found for this style. The CD 116's were produced by both Hemingray and Brookfield. This may be a transition-embossed mold, as the bold, prism "PATENT/MAY 2, 1893" embossing is significantly different in style than the rest of the embossing. This may indicate that the embossing was added to a smooth base mold when the drip points were added. It is possible that this style was produced by modifying a CD 121.4 mold. About very near mint. An uncommon style that is often overlooked!

CD-116 - A.U. Sold For: $198 Color: Aqua
This CD style is getting tougher to acquire. The "MAY 2 1893" date and the mold line around the crown make it easy to attribute this insulator to Hemingray. None of the variations of this style are actually embossed "A.U." (American Union) but there are many examples with "A.U." blotted out. It is possible that this style was produced by modifying a CD 121.4 mold that had been embossed "A.U." Two missing drip points, 1/8" wire ridge flake, a few little dings here and there. Neat "prism style" embossing with the "loopy 2!"
