| Nicknamed the "Mad Hatter." For over fifty years, only one of these was known. It was found in the late 1960's in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. A non-collector found this piece in a basket of insulators at a yard sale a couple of years ago in Pennsylvania. He thought the shape was a little different and he liked the wording "Philadelphia" that was on the piece so he bought it. Little did he know the significance of what he found! The patent date embossed on the insulator, April 7,1896, was for another type of "no tie" insulator where the tie was made instantly with the snap of a lever. Neither example of the "Mad Hatter" was found with this lever. The original piece is in the Tommy Bolack collection and we have heard someone comment it was his favorite piece. This example has a 1/2" flake and an open bubble with some flaking on the front, a couple of small dings and a 1/2" area of roughness on the rear skirt from the manufactur |
