CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $1,925 Color: Light Blue w/ Flatworm
What catches your eye is a long and wide impurity that looks like a flatworm with an Olive Amber streak down its back! It starts in the front below the wire groove and runs up, over the pinhole, and back to the wire ridge. Some additional worms dance around in the dome. This is the crown-embossed variant, however the embossing is very weak as is typical of this style. A few flakes on the wire ridge, a few dings here and there, and a 1/2" inner skirt chip. Some chatter on the bottom of the skirt, and the base is worn as if it was used as a paperweight. The colored flatworm over the dome makes this "Boston" insulator unique and desirable!

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $2,475 Color: Dark Tealy Green
What a stunning and desirable color! This classic "Boston Barrel" is less common than the CD 158 variant and has many of the typical "Boston" characteristics, including six panels on the dome, segmented threads, and embossing on the inner skirt. The Boston Bottle Works began to produce insulators in the early 1870s and ceased production around 1877. Samuel Oakman was granted patents for three- and four-segmented collapsible plungers to form the characteristic threads. 1" chip on the upper wire ridge, 1" chip/bruise on the lower wire ridge, 1/4" ding/bruise on the crown, feather bruise/fracture that is about 1" wide at the base and 2" wide at the lower wire ridge. Although the insulator has significant damage, the embossing "BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS / PATENT.OCT. 15. 72" on the inner skirt is in great shape. Displays very nicely from the front. Here's a chance for you to own this rare and desirable piece for a fraction of the cost

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $770 Color: Deep Blue Aqua EIN: [020]
Your classic "Boston Barrel." 1/4" wire ridge chip and a few smaller ones. Some wear on the base. The word "BOSTON" in the embossing is a little hard to read. [UPDATE: View 3 shows a picture of the base] Often found in Light Aqua, this example has a darker coloration. The CD 158.2 Boston is less common than the CD 158 variant. The Boston Bottle Works began to produce insulators in the early 1870s and ceased production around 1877. Samuel Oakman was granted patents for three- and four-segmented collapsible plungers to form the characteristic threads. A classic and desirable early Boston insulator!

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $963 Color: Light Aqua
{Four segmented threads} Excellent condition with a little roughness on one of the segmented threads; may have been lightly tumble cleaned. Leans to the right due to an underpour. Typical weak embossing on the crown. It is interesting to note that "BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS PATENTED OCT 15 72" is embossed in a circle. See lot 116 for the variant with inner skirt embossing. Much better condition than is typical for a "Boston Barrel."

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $506 Color: Light Aqua
{Four segmented threads} 3/8" wire ridge chip, a couple of 1/4" wire ridge flakes and a 3/8" bruise on the dome. The inner skirt is perfect, and you can read the strong embossing "BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS PATENT APLd FOR." Another odd shape with a six sided crown tapering up to a rounded dome. Less common than the CD 158 in lot 114. Another classic Boston!

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $2,475 Color: Dark Tealy Green
Weak embossing on the crown reads "BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS PATENTED OCT 15 72". 1/4" and 1/8" ridge flakes, otherwise about very near mint. Many of these have chips on the inner or outer skirt or on the base. This does not. Any insulator in this style is desirable, and a colored example like this is especially so. See lot 36 for another example in Blue. An added bonus is the "BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS" embossing. The four segmented threads and the six sided dome add additional visual interest. Overall, quite good condition and in a stunning color!

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $352 Color: Blue
Fracture across half the dome, significant chipping on one segmented thread. A little haze, but a light cleaning would make this sparkle. Dug from the Westford, MA town dump, just a few miles from where your auctioneers live, this is the less common embossing variant with BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS PATENTED OCT 15 72 embossed around the crown. Nicknamed the "Boston Barrel", this early style features the four segmented threads and the hexagonal dome. See lot 37 for a shade of green. Own a piece of New England history!

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $352 Color: Deep Rich Blue
Two 1/2" wire ridge chips, 3/8" flake on the crown appears to be reglued, bruise at the top of a facet. May have been lightly tumbled. This insulator has a neat milky worm that winds its way around the wire groove area, creating an interesting "zigzag" effect! (#0958)

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Sold For: $209 Color: Bright Blue
1 1/2" square base chip, 1" wire groove chip. There is no damage to the inner skirt and the embossing is strong. The barrels are harder to find than the CD 158 "Boston Signal" although they were both manufactured at about the same time. The Boston Bottle Works began in 1871 or 1872 and ceased production around 1877. (#5248)

CD-158.2 - BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS Light Aqua Sold For: $770 Color: Light Aqua
A little factory grinding of the sharp mold line on the top of the dome. A small inner skirt chip takes out a "T" in "PATENT". Another classic Boston piece! (#5250)
