|
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - MCLAUGHLIN Sold For: $45 Color: Emerald Green

|

CD-164 - MAYDWELL Sold For: $121 Color: White Milk w/ Caramel Swirls
For a "White Milk" insulator, these are found in a number of subtle pastel colors. This example has a green tint, but what is most interesting is that it has some caramel swirls which are most prominent in the rear, and a large patch of caramel encircled with caramel. It also has some lighter glass swirls that almost look like opalescent glass. A crease in the rear wire groove follows along with the swirling. There are also darker and lighter areas in the skirt, especially in the left front. 1/2" stress line on the base. Miles away from your typical "White Milk" piece!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - MAYDWELL Sold For: $30 Color: White Milk w/ Green Tint
| Other than cleaning the pin hole, mint
|
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - HEMINGRAY Sold For: $908 Color: Orange Amber
This is a classic Hemingray color for a piece that's hard to find. The style was know as the "Extra Deep Groove Double Petticoat" in the trade. 1/2" inner skirt chip, otherwise about very near mint. A desirable and standout piece to add to your CD 164 Hemingray collection!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $55 Color: Sagey Light Aqua
The smooth base examples are of earlier production and are harder to find than their drip-pointed counterparts. Some claim that auctioneers make up color names, but we really feel that the color "Sagey Light Aqua" fits this the best. 2 open bubbles on the base, but with no associated chipping. 1/2" base flake, a little roughness on the inner skirt. This will fit in well with your CD 164 lineup!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $231 Color: Jade Green Milk
Solid Jade! The drip points on these typically have some damage, but these are in very fine condition. For the specialist, this is the variant that is missing the periods. Hard-to-see 2" wide bruise on the right side of the front skirt, otherwise easily very near mint. A color that will always stand out on your shelf!

CD-164 - Petticoat Royal Purple Sold For: $1,350
CD 164 No Name (020) Royal Purple w/ Faint Milky Swirls. Embossed only with the word PETTICOAT, these insulators were long thought to have been made in Canada. The question was, by who? Then in 2018, David Bethman found a 1913 newspaper article showing glassware produced by the Anacortes (Washington) Glass Company which includes not only bottles but CD 164 and CD 113 insulators. Our consignor says this example was found in New Westminster, British Columbia. While it may appear that the drip points are flaked; they are not. Instead, they are tilted inward almost 90-degrees. The insulator shows evidence of a lehr kiss, including shallow marks & annealing lines above and below the embossing. The flattened drip points and other marks are likely the result of the insulator coming into contact with others on the cooling rack.

Neither is this the (020) embossing as the letter G is actually a G and not a C. Note that the crown is tilted a little to one side. |

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $798 Color: Off Clear

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - BROOKFIELD Sold For: $1,073 Color: Milky Emerald Green
A stunning display of milk swirls which are thick enough to give the insulator a jade appearance in areas, while still allowing the viewer to see some of the pronounced swirls. In the front of the dome, there is a clear dividing line between these characteristics. One can even see some patches with no swirling, as well as some amber swirls. This insulator commands a stunning presence, whether you base light it or front light it; even with back lighting you can see the swirls and the jade-like appearance. These milky Brookfield pieces are much less common than their Hemingray counterparts. An amazing insulator, especially in this fine condition. An Emerald "gem"!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - BROOKFIELD Sold For: $154 Color: Dark Yellow Green w/ Earthworm

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - HEMINGRAY Sold For: $352 Color: Orange Amber EIN: [040]
Classic Hemingray Orange Amber, and much harder to find than its CD 162 counterpart! 1" bruise in front affects 2 drip points, otherwise very near mint. There are few colorful Hemingray 164's and this amber shade is one of the rarest!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $418 Color: Teal Green w/ Amber Swirls EIN: [030]

This unusual coloration will fit well into your collection! |

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $633 Color: Milky Aqua
H.G. 164s in Jade Green can regularly be found, but here you can clearly see well-defined milk swirls! A very unusual piece! It is difficult to find a Jade example without significant drip damage, but in this case two chipped drip points and an open bubble on the inner skirt are about all to report. View 1 shows it base lit and view 2 shows it front lit. You can't go wrong! A Milky Aqua CD 164 with slightly more swirls soared to over $2,000 in one of our recent auctions. This is the perfect definition of "Milky Aqua", with heavy and well-pronounced swirls. Don't pass it by!

CD-164 - HEMINGRAY-20 Sold For: $798 Color: Bright Orange Amber
Amber CD 164 Hemingray signals are only listed in the Price Guide in one shade -- this one! 1" scallop bruise in the front, 1" inner skirt chip, otherwise very near mint. The Price Guide reflects the relative rarity of the "Extra Deep Groove" style, and this bright Orange Amber coloration is always popular!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $2,035 Color: Milky Aqua
This is one stunning piece! H.G. 164's in Jade Green can regularly be found, and it is difficult to find one of them without significant drip damage. This example only has about a half dozen chipped drip points, otherwise it's very, very near mint. The Jade Milk units are quite desirable for collectors. Perhaps you will find an Aqua one with a little milk swirling. This is the perfect definition of "Milky Aqua" with very heavy and well-pronounced swirls. To best appreciate the swirls the insulator should be front lit. You will find nice milky swirling in some of the smaller Hemingray styles such as CD 106 and 113. However, this CD 164 style is massive compared to those and, with the additional surface area, the extreme swirling can be seen over a larger expanse of glass. The less common CD 162 in Milky Aqua lists for over $1,000 in the price guide; what's this one worth? A rarely encountered example and an outstanding piece for the CD 164 collector or the Hemi
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $6,325 Color: Lilac Purple
Only seven CD 164's embossed H.G.CO. in any shade of purple are known, and among them there is some color variation. This insulator is lighter in color and has a different hue. The mold was originally for smooth base insulators, as the embossing is the early "transition style." If you get into condition specifics, there is a 1/4" flake at the left mold line and a chipped drip point. Below "1893" is a closed bubble and not damage. This example is perhaps in better condition than CD 162 signals costing a tenth less. We'll put the estimate under the book value and see where it goes. A collector doesn't have an opportunity to see one of these pieces often, let alone to purchase one, especially in this fine condition and stunning color. A "top shelf" piece for sure. Don't pass this by!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - BROOKFIELD Sold For: $154 Color: Olive Green w/ Amber Swirls
More crude than your typical Brookfield. 1/4" inner skirt chip and 3/8" wire ridge flake, otherwise easily very near mint. Pretty swirls and "tiger-striping" can be seen from skirt to dome and around all the sides. Swirled Brookfields are gaining in popularity, so you'd better get yours now!

CD-164 - HEMINGRAY // No 20 Sold For: $242 Color: Limey Green w/ Amber Blending
Excellent condition. This has an attractive base color of Lime Green, but the presence of Amber patches gives the insulator a whole different look. Nothing comes close to this color in the Price Guide for this embossing. Quite a rarity especially considering the condition!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $165 Color: Deep Yellow Green
3/4" skirt chip in the rear affects four drip points. 1/8" wire ridge flake, otherwise at least very near mint. Known in the trade as the "Extra Deep Groove Petticoat Insulator" style, this example displays well, and the very attractive coloration passes light easily!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - B.G.M.CO. Sold For: $1,210 Color: Purple w/ Milk Ribbons
1/8" flake/open bubble on the skirt, 1/8" flake on the inner skirt, several other dings here and there. A nice milky ribbon runs from the base of the front skirt, up and over the pinhole, and down to the rear skirt where there is a larger concentration of milk. The Baltimore Glass Manufacturing Company was formed in 1896 and it is believed they produced their last insulators in 1903. The CD 164 style is one of the more difficult styles to acquire, and this is a great example!

CD-164 - McLaughlin-20 Sold For: $440 Color: Citrine swirled.
It is difficult to beat the color and character found in these swirled McLaughlin wide groove signals. Some tend to lean more to a golden citrine, while some display a stronger green influence. This medium citrine example falls right in the middle with a pleasing, swirling blend of both.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G. CO. Sold For: $165 Color: Deep Yellow Green
1" bruise on the skirt under "MAY", otherwise about very near mint. Similar in color to lot 106 but with more yellow tones. Known in the trade as the "Extra Deep Groove Petticoat Insulator" style, this example is unusual in that it has some amber swirls in it. A rich color that still passes light well.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - HEMINGRAY-20 Sold For: $418 Color: Hemingray Blue
About 10 chipped drips and a little flake on the wire ridge. What makes this insulator so unique is that there is an impression of the reverse side of an Indian Head penny in the dome! Indian Head pennies were last produced in 1909. The colored spot in the penny impression is an impurity that could have been transferred from the penny. A great item for the "junk in glass" collector! An oddball like this doesn't come along very often, so now's your chance to own a unique item!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G. CO. Sold For: $1,650 Color: Glowing Peacock Blue
Four sheared off drips in the front and a few others are flaked, 3/8" skirt flake and a 1" bruise on the rear. Interesting glass folds meander around the dome. This colorful signal style was termed the "Extra Deep Groove Petticoat Insulator" in the literature of the time. Many came from the Kansas City area. Quite a step up from its similar CD 162 counterpart, this beautiful piece is extremely rare and seldom seen for sale. A stunning gem!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - BROOKFIELD Sold For: $231 Color: Swirly Amber
1/2" skirt flake, potstone bruise and some inner and outer skirt annealing fissures. Check out lot 146 for another neat CD 164 Brookfield with amber-swirled green, and bid on them both for a great combo! This insulator has that desirable rich amber coloration with some tiger swirling and some aqua as well!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - BROOKFIELD // No 38 Sold For: $50 Color: Bright Green w/ Amber Blending
Very good condition. A little roughness on a couple of threads. Very few Brookfield insulators are marked with a style number. This is one of the exceptions, as it is marked "No 38". You can see amber tones in the dome. This insulator contrasts well with the amber example in lot 143, and is a bright, well-saturated color!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - McLAUGHLIN-20 Sold For: $264 Color: Light Citrine
Very, very near mint. This attractive insulator is filled with bubbles, making it really sparkle! A clean and shiny example of Citrine!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - MAYDWELL-20 Sold For: $17 Color: White Milk w/ Green Tint
Mint. The milky MAYDWELL insulators exist in pure white as can be seen in lot 64, as well as several tints of blue, green, pink and yellow. In this example, a strong green tint can be seen, especially when looking up the pinhole. Contrast this with the pure white milk example in lot 62.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - MAYDWELL-20 Sold For: $83 Color: White Milk w/ Butterscotch Swirls
Mint. Most of the white milk MAYDWELL-20's are pure white in color or have a very slight tint such as lot 64. This one is quite unusual in that it has strong butterscotch swirls, giving it more of an overall yellowish color. Contrast this with the pure white lot 62 and you can see a significant difference! Quite an unusual and uncommon variant!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - MAYDWELL-20 Sold For: $17 Color: White Milk
Factory mint, with a few lehr marks on the bottom. The classic, pure white milk glass of this insulator is what you'll more often see in decorative objects, not industrial use. They were actually made to imitate the look of white porcelain insulators. Manufactured by the Crystalite Products Corporation for Maydwell & Hartzell, an electrical utility distributor. A must for every collection!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - BROOKFIELD // No 38 Sold For: $61 Color: Amber Swirled Olive Green
1/2" scratch to the rear of the left mold line. Nice swirls can be seen from all sides. These colorful and swirled Brookfields are gaining in popularity, and no wonder; they are certainly attractive additions to any collection!

1/4" ding on the rear crown, otherwise very near mint. These pieces range from clear with a slight blue streak, to blue with a slight clear streak. This falls into the latter category. The division of color on these pieces is typically a pie-shaped wedge which can best be seen by looking at the base as shown in view 3. (#6479)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G. CO. Sold For: $83 Color: Emerald Green
2" base bruise, fracture in the dome/wire groove that goes around the circumference. This insulator has a much more unique and desirable coloration than the dark yellow green examples that are usually seen, and it displays very well! (#6449)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - BROOKFIELD Sold For: $121 Color: Greeny Aqua w/ Amber Bands
Easily grades very near mint or better. In the front, a pronounced amber band goes up to the dome and wraps around the wire ridge and groove area. These character pieces are certainly gaining in popularity! (#0114)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - STAR Sold For: $83 Color: Snowy Fizzy Deep Yellow Green

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - STAR Sold For: $72 Color: Snowy Fizzy Blue

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $33 Color: Ice Aqua
Drip chipping, 2" bruise to the left of center, skirt and wire ridge flakes. Neat old prism-style embossing with the "loopy 2". This is quite a tough color for an early CD 164! (#6445)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $121 Color: Emerald Green
2" bruise on the front with no glass missing or drip damage, otherwise very good condition. There has been an increased demand for colored CD 164 "extra deep groove double petticoat" insulators. The Emerald Green variant of this piece is much less common than the Yellow Green color and can command a premium! (#6441)

CD-164 - PETTICOAT Sold For: $396 Color: Rich Purple
Four-DP bruise, three drips missing at the right mold line, a few others are chipped, a small wire ridge flake. At one time these were thought to have possibly been made by Hemingray, but the general consensus now is that they were not. A great "Hemingray imposter" in any event! (#6700)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - McLAUGHLIN-20 Sold For: $297 Color: Citrine

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $88 Color: Bright Lime Green
Two missing drips next to a hard-to-see six drip wide bruise in the rear, wire ridge flake near the mold line, the rest is better than VNM. Transition-embossed 164s are much less common than later examples, and they command a higher price. You can see how the patent date was squeezed in below the "H.G.CO." Perhaps you can find a mold match with one of your smooth base examples! A great color for this early 164, so don't pass it by! (#0451)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $2,255 Color: Purple
Three chipped drips, thumbnail wire ridge flake on the front, 1" wire ridge chip on the rear. An extremely rare color for H.G.CO. 164s, and a piece you'll seldom see for sale! This is one of seven known. The early transition embossing adds even more character! (#6458)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - H.G.CO. Sold For: $220 Color: Dark Yellow Green

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD-164 - STAR Sold For: $319 Color: Yellow Green
Base repairs of a small skirt chip and several shallow flakes, small inner skirt chip. The damage doesn't detract from the enormous UFO at the front wire ridge. The UFO is 3/4 inch in diameter and probably 1/2 inch deep. When you look closely, it looks like white crystals growing out of a black rock. You can see the close-up in the first photo, but view 2 shows the entire front of the insulator so you can see how well-centered the rock is! Some STARs have a little gunk and some snow, but this one is way off the charts! (#6708)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
