CD-181 - {Unembossed} {Pluto style} Sold For: $2,090 Color: Light Aqua
| A classic and desirable "Pluto!" The ears are fragile and typically broken. The bottom of the upper left ear was broken off and has been professionally repaired. The insulator was likely dug as it has the typical ping and ding marks here and there and some very minor scuffing on the surface. The insulator has been lightly tumble cleaned. A 1/2" inner skirt chip on the right front and a quarter-sized flake on the rear dome have also been repaired. There are two 3/4" stress lines radiating down at an angle from the lower wire groove. All that aside, this will display very well in your light box. Most "Pluto" insulators were found in Arrastra Gulch, Colorado. However, in the trade journals at the time, it was reported that they were used for the "Electric Subway" which was featured at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, Illinois. The insulators were designed by R. H. Pierce, First Assistant Electrical Engineer on the project. One drawing of that |

CD-181 - 'Pluto' Light Aqua Sold For: $975
| CD 181 No Embossing Pluto (010) Light Aqua. Collectors have nicknamed these Plutos after the cartoon dog due to the large ears. They were original made for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The power lines were out of sight in underground vaults. The idea for the design was to allow two wires to run in a confined space. As soon as the Exposition was over, the vaults were discontinued and the materials sold to other power companies. Most went to Colorado as that was a period of expansion for mining operations there. |

CD-181 - Pluto Sold For: $963 Color: Light Aqua

However, in the trade journals at the time, it was reported that they were used for the "Electric Subway" which was featured at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, Illinois. The insulators were designed by R. H. Pierce who was First Assistant Electrical Engineer on the project. One drawing of that time period shows twelve tightly spaced crossarms on either side of the track, each containing five insulators! About a third of the rear skirt is missing, and there is a very light haze on the piece. The "ears" typically have chipping or flaking; they are even broken off and reattached. These ears are in great condition! If you are unable get a mint "Pluto", this example, which displays wonderfully from the front, is the one for you! |
