CD-317 - Chambers Aqua Sold For:
CD 317 Chambers (010) Aqua. Made by Hemingray, these were used as part of the Chambers lightning rod system. Question for you: How often do you visit the local antique shop in your area? Quit going in because they never have anything? Well, our consignor is glad he went into, yet again, this shop in Sisters, Oregon that is often visited by many insulator collectors. Because on the day he went in the shop, the owner had put out this insulator. He got it for a very reasonable, although not ridiculously low, price.

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $1,100 Color: "Green"
Excellent condition for this style! No chips or flakes on the saddle groove, no flakes on the base, not even the typical annealing fissures around the pinhole. Much darker than "Light Green." Josephus Chambers patented "An Improvement in Lightning Rods and Insulators" on August 14, 1877, and this "Candlestick" insulator was used along with the "Chambers Companion" (CD 132.4, as can be seen in lot 159) as part of his lightning rod system. They were both produced by the Hemingray Glass Company in Covington, Kentucky and will go well together in your collection!

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $688 Color: Deep Aqua
Very minor wear on the base and very minor scuffing on the flange; perhaps this was used as a door stop. Typical factory annealing lines on the skirt, although, remarkably, there are none of the typical lines around the pinhole! Josephus Chambers patented "An Improvement in Lightning Rods and Insulators" on August 14, 1877 and this "Candlestick" insulator was used along with the "Chambers' Companion" (CD 132.4 as can be seen in lot 194) as part of his lightning rod system. They were both produced by the Hemingray Glass Company in Covington, Kentucky. The darker aqua makes for an attractive, bold color!

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $1,018 Color: Bright Fizzy Green (previously "Bright Fizzy Lime Green"); Color Update
Please read our discussion of the color green. The estimate has been changed from $1,500 - $2,000 to $1,250 - $1,750. Nicknamed the "Candlestick", this insulator was used along with the "Chambers' Companion" (CD 132.4 as can be seen in lot 194) as part of the lightning rod system patented by Josephus C. Chambers on August 14, 1877. 3/8" open bubble on the flange. This may have been used as a doorstop in that there is light scuffing on the bottom and the flange. Typically, the saddle groove on these is chipped. This one is virtually perfect! This example is also remarkably free of visually distracting heavy annealing lines in the pinhole and below it. The insulator is in really amazing condition, and the bright, glowing color really pops!

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $825 Color: Aqua
The damage-prone saddle groove is free of flakes and chips. The flange is also prone to damage, especially on the sharp inner edge, and this example is outstanding in that regard as well. There are often a lot of annealing fissures around the threads, and amazingly this piece is free from them! To top it off, the saddle groove, which can be oriented in any direction, is almost perfectly aligned with the embossing. Josephus Chambers patented "An Improvement in Lightning Rods and Insulators" on August 14, 1877, and followed it up with patents for a variety of other uses for his invention. This "Candlestick" insulator was used as part of his lightning rod system. It was produced by the Hemingray Glass Company in Covington, Kentucky. While you might consider it just "aqua", it's quite unusual to have so many desirable aspects in one insulator. This outstanding example is definitely worth a premium!

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $1,485 Color: Light Green Aqua
Essentially factory mint, with a 1/2" bubble on the base of the flange on the left rear. Some folds can be seen in the glass. "Candlesticks" are always popular!

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $633 Color: Rich Aqua
1 1/2" factory annealing fissure due to an impurity in the glass, some typical minor flaking on the sharp edge of the inside of the flange. For completeness, we will mention a few areas of very light haze that disappear when back lit. The damage-prone groove is virtually perfect and doesn't even show a trace of a wire rub! Nicknamed the "Candlestick", this insulator was used as part of the lightning rod system patented by Josephus C. Chambers on August 14, 1877. This example leans towards green but we'll be conservative with our description. Several steps up from the more pale examples and the condition is better than most, making this a great addition to your collection!

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $2,200 Color: Bright Lime Green
Outstanding! "Candlesticks" typically have chipping on the ears, rubbing in the wire groove, flakes on the base and the sharp inside edge of the flange, and heavy annealing lines around the threads. All those areas on this piece are flawless. The entire piece is overall in amazing condition. The low pinhole makes it look like a giant 3" diameter marble filled with "fizz" is suspended above the pinhole. What a terrific piece!

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $1,815 Color: Fizzy Lime Green
| Nearly all "candlesticks" are prone to chipping and wear in the saddle groove, as well as flaking around the base. This one is just about perfect! Josephus Chambers patented "An Improvement in Lightning Rods and Insulators" in 1877, and followed it up with patents for a variety of other uses for his invention. In this fantastic example of a Chambers "candlestick", you can see fizz throughout the glass, intensified in the dome by the low pinhole. You will rarely encounter such an outstanding specimen! CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $1,045 Color: "Simply Green"
The "candlesticks" often have chipping and significant wear in the saddle. This one just has a little speck of wear on either side and a few small flakes on the base. An excellent example of what we are calling "Simply Green"! (#0918)

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $908 Color: Bright Lime Green
Excellent condition with only a paper-thin flake on the inside of the base. A little flaking on the raised mold seam. A large bubble in the rear is open to the threads. This color has seen much attention in our previous auctions! (#0525)

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $2,365 Color: Glowing Lime Green
The "candlesticks" are normally found with some damage in the saddle groove and base. This one has a perfect saddle groove and there's not even a trace of a wire rub! 1/8" ding at the base of the skirt causes a small 1/2" skirt flake. The saddle groove is usually oriented randomly. As an extra bonus, this one is perfectly in line with the embossing! Outstanding color and condition! (#8031)

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Dark Teal Blue Sold For: $1,815 Color: Dark Teal Blue
A saddle chip in the rear and a 2" flat base chip, also on the rear flange, a pinky flake at base of flange, otherwise it's in great shape! A little milky strand and a few milky globs around the base add some character. This is a rarely encountered color, and makes for a standout piece! See lot 170 for a bright lime green candlestick! UPDATE: The picture did not show the true dark rich teal color of this piece. We have posted new photos which better reflect the color. This is truly an extraordinary color which will not disappoint you! (#8027)

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Bright Lime Green w/ Milky Swirls Sold For: $2,475 Color: Bright Lime Green w/ Milky Swirls
VVNM. The wire groove is perfect; we can't find anything wrong with this piece! The area above the pinhole looks like a "snowglobe" with bubbles and black specs. There is a nice wide streak of milk in the skirt. Most people associate this "candlestick" with building lightning protection systems; however, Josephus C. Chambers also patented other uses for this insulator: to insulate metallic roof cresting from the building, to electrically isolate oil tanks from fire or lightning, and to protect telegraph lines from electrical strikes. See lot 10 for a really dark candlestick! (#8033)

CD-317 - CHAMBERS Sold For: $1,540 Color: Light Blue w/ Milk Swirls
