CD-731 - McKee Blue       Sold For: $550
CD 731 McKee (010) Blue. Dating from the period of the Transcontinental Railroad, this particular example may have been used on a chair leg. That would account for the minor wear on the dome and clean body otherwise. Those used outdoors on telegraph lines are typically alkali stained. Nice dark blue and in great condition. A small open bubble on the base as shown at the 11:00 o'clock position of

CD-731 - {Unembossed}       Sold For: $143       Color: Light Aqua
This threadless insulator is called the "Compromise style" and is a cross between the "egg" style and the "hat" style. There are some milk wisps that dance around the pinhole. Two 3/8" and one 1/2" skirt flakes/chips, a few other dings here and there, a hairline factory annealing line goes from the skirt to the dome at the mold line. A classic shape, and a great "starter piece" for a threadless collection!

CD-731 - TILLOTSON & CO.       Sold For: $1,210       Color: Cobalt Blue Blackglass
What a beautiful color! The rich, Cobalt Blue coloration can be seen through the skirt and the wire groove. It appears that two or three pieces were reglued to reconstruct the insulator perfectly, and there is no missing glass. One of the pieces that was reglued shows a much lighter coloration than the rest of the insulator, however we are very confident this is not a resin repair. A great insulator at a fraction of the price of a very near mint example!

CD-731 - TILLOTSON & CO.       Sold For: $578       Color: Light Aqua
The crown-embossed "TILLOTSON" variant is much less common than its unembossed counterpart. Luther Tillotson was a superintendent of telegraph for The New York and Erie Railroad and ran a telegraph and railroad supplies business in New York. CD 731 was known as a "Compromise style" insulator, combining the best features of the "egg" and the "hat" styles. A couple of 1/4" skirt flakes, typical annealing lines in the skirt and pinhole; overall very nice for an old threadless insulator.

CD-731 - {Unembossed}       Sold For: $352       Color: Olive Green Blackglass EIN: [020]
Two 1/2" skirt fractures, 1/2" skirt chip, otherwise about very near mint. There is a threaded counterpart for this style, CD 131, and it would be interesting to display them both together. This "compromise" style insulator contrasts well with the light-colored 731 in lot 154 and the medium shade in lot 152.

CD-731 - {Unembossed}       Sold For: $231       Color: Blue
Some high point wear, otherwise easily very near mint. An interesting funnel-shaped bubble at the top of the pinhole. According to historical information the family of threadless insulators that includes the CD 731 incorporated the best features of the "egg" style and the "hat" style, and was sometimes called the "compromise" style. See lot 153 and lot 154 for other 731s. A nice example!

CD-731 - TILLOTSON & CO.       Sold For: $528       Color: Light Aqua w/ Amber Stringer EIN: [010]
The units that are embossed "TILLOTSON" are much less common and more desirable than their unembossed counterparts. In addition, this example has a nice amber stringer running from the base of the insulator up over the dome and back down to the skirt. 1/2" base chip on the rear, otherwise very fine condition. According to historical information the family of threadless insulators that includes the CD 731 incorporated the best features of the "egg" style and the "hat" style, and was sometimes called the "compromise" style. See lot 152 and lot 153 for other examples. This Tillotson is a great "compromise"!

CD-731 - TILLOTSON       Sold For: $660       Color: Blue w/ Blue Streaks
Great condition! What is very unique about this piece is there are some dark thread-like blue streaks running through the glass, especially in the skirt. A little hard to see, but they are more pronounced in view 1 and view 2, which were taken underwater to highlight them more. Note that there are some small air bubbles from the water that you can see on the surface. It's hard to place an estimate on this, so you decide!

CD-731 - TILLOTSON       Sold For: $1,815       Color: Glowing Sapphire Blue w/ Milk
1/4" dings on the dome and wire ridge, 3/8" base flake, a few other imperfections. An amazing insulator with a rich, saturated color! In addition, some milky impurity flows over the dome, down into the skirt, and back up to the pinhole again. "TILLOTSON" is strongly embossed in an arc on the crown. A Hemingray insulator catalog in 1946 includes a section called "An historical outline of communication insulators." The timeline begins with Morse's original telegraph line, running from Baltimore to Washington and completed in 1844. The section continues up until the 1900's. It states: "In 1865 the 'egg' and 'umbrella' types of insulators were combined in a new insulator properly called the 'Compromise' insulator." Today we know that insulator as CD 731. This style in Sapphire Blue is quite rare and desirable!

CD-731 - S. MCKEE &.Co.       Sold For: $297       Color: Bright Blue w/ Milk Band
Very near mint. In the rear, a nice white milk band runs down from the pinhole, along the skirt and partly up the pinhole. Leans to the right. A nice bright well saturated color! These are getting more scarce so grab this one quickly!

CD-731 - {Unembossed}       Sold For: $187       Color: Light Aqua w/ Olive Bands
A 1" base chip next to a 1" base bruise. An attractive olive band wraps around the whole pinhole in the crown creating a bit of a translucent effect in those areas. Some small bubbles in the dome highlight this effect. Clean and shiny and a great character piece!
