| Shows some typical signs of having been buried; a couple of shallow base chips as can be seen in the photo. May have been lightly tumble cleaned. This "Pilgrim Hat" was discovered in Richmond, Virginia. Early telegraph insulators were apparently stored in a Confederate Army supply depot during the Civil War. Many of the insulators within the depot were destroyed or badly damaged in April 1865 when parts of the city were reportedly set on fire by the Confederate troops to keep the contents from Union hands. Although the "Confederate Eggs" (CD 701.6) are the best known threadless recovered here, other threadless styles were found as well, including a small number of CD 738s. This deep color still passes some light, mostly in the skirt, and areas of heavy milk swirling can be seen, increasing the attractive appearance of this civil war relic. (#0161) |
